Beat the winter blues
As the days get shorter and the nights get colder, even the best of us can get a little down in the dumps. But there's a lot you can do to stop the winter blues from taking hold and keep yourself feeling healthy and happy until the summer rolls around again.
Exercise: even if the weather is cold and rainy, there's no excuse not to get moving. Taking regular exercise boosts your energy levels and releases those great feel-good hormones that help you get through the day with a smile on your face. If you're fed up with your usual exercise regime ring the changes with a new sport or fitness class. Or how about planning an active holiday, skiing or hiking, or going somewhere warm for swimming and snorkelling? Don't forget that shopping can be good exercise too, so hit the mall and power walk your way round the aisles.

Embracing the footy season!
If the start of the football season fills you with dread then here are a few tips to help you survive until the final whistle.
Learn the game: Ask a friendly footie fan to run through the rules so at least you know what you're up against.
Pick a team: Football's more fun if you have a team to follow, so choose one at random and keep an eye on how it's doing.
Go to a match: There's no better place to be swept up in the excitement of footie than by seeing it live.
Buy the shirt: For full immersion therapy, buy the team singlet. At least you might be able to turn the talk from the field to fashion when you're stuck with a load of footie fans.

Winter tyre tips
Make sure your tyres are up to the challenge of winter driving.
Deflate for off-roading: Strange but true - if you're planning to take your 4WD off-road this winter, one of the safest things you can do is let the tyres down. A slightly deflated tyre will flatten out the tread pattern, increasing the area of contact between the tyre and the surface, which can be particularly important on sandy soils, where grip is at a premium. Don't forget to re-inflate the tyres to their correct pressure when you're ready to hit the open road again though.
Space-saver tyres: If you drive a late-model vehicle and you've never checked the spare tyre, you may be in for a shock the next time you have a flat. Many newer vehicles are now equipped with a space-saver spare tyre, which is designed to take up less room in your vehicle. Much narrower than regular tyres, they're also recognisable by their distinctive yellow or coloured rim, which is to remind you that they're designed only for temporary use and not for driving at speeds in excess of 80km or for more than 150km.
