Who said that?

Ever wondered how some of our odder everyday phrases came about? Let us enlighten you... 'To turn a blind eye'

This means to knowingly refuse to acknowledge something that you know to be real, and is supposed to have been said by Admiral Horatio Nelson when wilfully disobeying a signal to withdraw during a naval engagement. Although tales of this sort, especially concerning heroes such as Nelson, often turn out to be exaggerated or entirely fictitious, but this one seems to be genuine. During the naval battle of Copenhagen in 1801, Nelson led the attack of the British fleet against a joint Danish/Norwegian enemy. He was commanded by Admiral Sir Hyde Parker, who sent his orders to Nelson's ship by means of flags. However, the two men disagreed on tactics and a contemporary biography of Nelson reported that, when Parker ordered a withdrawal, Nelson simply 'turned a blind eye' and refused to see the signal.

Audi A4

The new Audi A4 arrived here last month and has already caused a stir. Although it has enough of the favourite characteristics to please Audi lovers the world over, there are a few innovative features to attract new buyers. Crucially the new model is centred on the 'drivetrain' architecture that was launched on the A5/S5 coupe for improved handling and steering, and demonstrates Audi's commitment to becoming a predominately front-wheel-drive brand.

Two petrol and two turbodiesel models spearhead the new A4 range - including three front-wheel drive - and will be joined by a quattro turbodiesel sedan variant, and Avant (wagon) model in October.

In addition to a full complement of safety equipment and driver aids, including antilock brakes, stability control and eight airbags, the base model A4s have alloy wheels as standard (16-inch, six-spoke) along with foglamps, aluminium exterior trim, aircon and a 10-speaker (but single disc) Concert sound system. Inside Milano leather trim is included, but while the rear seat's a splitfold design, the front seats are fully manual. A $2,600 Comfort package includes upgrading the driver's seat to electric and adds lumbar adjustment to both front seats.

The turbo petrol 1.8 TFSI kicks off the sedan range and is priced from $50,900 for the six-speed manual. A Multitronic version, featuring Audis latest eight-speed CVT transmission, is priced from $53,500 and followed by the new common-rail 2.0 TDI turbodiesel A4, available in Multitronic only from $54,900. Top of the range - and the only all-wheel-drive A4 - is the petrol V6 six-speed Tiptronic (automatic) 3.2 FSI Quattro, priced from $88,500.

Mothers Day

Don't forget to spoil your Mum on Sunday 11 May! Since the 1600s, Mothering Sunday has been a chance for children to show their appreciation - although in those days a cake was usually baked in Mother's honour, today we tend to go for flowers and gifts to make our Mums feel special.

If you'd like a break from the flowers this year, how about arranging for something mouthwatering to be sent to your Mum instead? www.edibleblooms.com has chocolate blooms, cookie blooms, fresh fruit blooms - really, they're delicious treats ingeniously designed into flower shapes! Priced from $49, the site offers a countrywide delivery service.

Tight nuts?

Well, are your nuts tight? If you can't be sure, then perhaps you need Checkpoint®, an innovative loose nut indicator that has been extremely helpful to many Fleetcare vehicle fleets.

The brightly coloured Polyethylene Checkpoint® devices are fixed to the hexagonal wheel nuts of a vehicle, making sure that their pointers are aligned in a recognisable pattern. Should one of the nuts loosen, the Checkpoint® moves with it, breaking the pattern and making it easy to spot. With the consequences of loose wheel nuts including wheel hub damage and in the worst cases the loss of a road wheel, it's clear that keeping the nuts tight is crucial to safety on the road.

For more information on Checkpoint®, including sizes, range and colours, go to www.cpsafety.com.au

Seeing red

Did you know that on average, we humans spend two weeks of our lives waiting for traffic lights to change?

Mothers Day Classic

Perhaps the best thing you can do for mums, sisters, aunts and friends on mother's day this year is to take part in The Mothers Day Classic and walk or run to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. If you can't participate in one of the events being held in capital cities and regional areas across Australia on 11 May, then sponsor someone who is, or make a donation online at www.mothersdayclassic.org

Wwwacky website

What's in a name? Well, quite a lot if you're interested in onomastics, which is the study of the origin of names. If you've never even heard of onomastics but would still like to know what your name means, then www.behindthename.com is the website for you. It lists thousands of English, French, German, Spanish, Indian, Egyptian, Hebrew, Arabic, biblical and mythological names and gives a meaning for each one. A pleasant surprise if your name happens to be Aimi, which is a combination of 'love' and 'beautiful' in Japanese, but not so good if you're called Neil and have probably been named after a cloud in Old Gaelic. Good fun anyway.
