Don't be a fuel fool

With so many fuels now available you could be forgiven for feeling a bit bewildered at the bowser. But choosing the right fuel when you fill up is crucial to the running of your vehicle – and picking the wrong pump can cost a packet to put right. Here’s our handy guide:

The most commonly sold fuels are unleaded - unleaded (ULP), premium unleaded (PULP) and ultra premium unleaded (UPULP) - all of which have a RON (Research Octane Number) rating, which determines the petrol’s resistance to pre-ignition. Vehicles filled with fuel that has an insufficient octane rating for the model make a characteristic ‘knocking’ sound, which means the fuel is detonating instead of burning smoothly. This is a waste of energy and can even damage the engine, so it’s important to make sure you choose the fuel with the recommended RON rating for your vehicle.

The Ford Falcon teaser

Will 2008 be the year of the Falcon? Ford certainly hopes so. The eighth incarnation of Australia's favourite model is due to be released later this year with engineering details to be revealed next month and the first of the new Falcons rolling off the production line in May. Wagon, ute and high performance versions of the car will follow between May and the end of June.

Codenamed Orion, the new-look Falcon has the fortunes of Ford Australia resting on its bonnet. The company has lost considerable ground in the large car market and sales of Falcons are just half what they were in 2004. The Falcon is now ranked fourth in its sector, behind the new Holden VE Commodore, the Toyota Corolla and the Mazda3, but Ford is aiming to change that. It’s already put $27m into a new research and development centre, $55m into a new stamping plant and spent $29m upgrading its proving ground in You Yangs. $1.8bn has been earmarked for engineering and development over the next decade, as Ford throws itself into building the new Falcon as well as a new Focus and a pick-up for Asia.

As the current Falcon has been around since 2002, there is plenty of speculation surrounding the launch of the new model. However, many industry insiders doubt it will change much, although new suspension is expected. We'll have to wait until next month for the first clues.

Happy Australia Day!
Australia Day is coming up, but where are you going to celebrate? Luckily http://www.australiaday.gov.au/pages/page2.asp has all the information you need on events and festivities across Australia.

If you're not going out, why not make a real iconic Aussie dessert and invite the neighbours round to help you enjoy it? This pavlova recipe is from The Cook and the Chef: ABC TV. We road tested it and it works perfectly! You'll be enjoying the best of the best pavlovas all summer long.

All you'll need are eggwhites, caster sugar, corn flour, white vinegar and vanilla. Oh and cream, bananas and passionfruit of course.

Get ready to rumble

American police can now shake the ground to attract the attention of drivers oblivious to the flashing blue lights, sirens and blazing headlamps. Several US police forces now have vehicles fitted with a device called ‘the Rumbler’ to grab the attention of road users up to 60m ahead.

Although no louder than a regular siren, the Rumbler emits low-frequency sounds, created by high-output sub-woofers and an amplifier, which shake the ground. It's designed for use only in 10-second blasts in areas where it is safe for motorists to get out of the way - the idea is that they can feel the emergency vehicle approaching, even if the audio system in their own car is blaring out at full volume.

U R dumped

When Britney Spears gave husband Kevin Federline the elbow by SMS, he became just one of a growing number of text dumpees, according to a survey carried out recently. 15 percent of the 2,194 people questioned by moneysupermarket.com admitted that they had been ditched by text or email and, although this does seem to be a very heartless and even cowardly way of ending a relationship, most people surveyed agreed that it wasn’t as bad as suddenly having your phone calls, text or emails ignored all together. Surprisingly, a quarter of 18- to 24-year-olds surveyed said that they would choose the traditional method of dumping - a letter.

Wwwacky website

If your new year's resolution this year is to keep to your new year's resolutions, then you might find this site helpful.

Mydr.com is committed to helping to create a healthy Australia, so if, like many of us, your resolutions are mainly focused on eating less, exercising more and not spending quite so much time watching TV you could pick up some useful tips.

Woolly resolutions are the ones that don’t make it past 2 January, so MyDr's advice is to make your resolution SMART; specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timely. Instead of just resolving to ‘lose some weight, try;I want to lose 15 kg so I can achieve my goal weight of 85 kg and I'm going to do this by swimming three times a week and cutting 1000 kilojoules a day from my intake so I can fit into my wedding outfit in November. Good luck!
