Interest Rates - on hold now til 2008?

As announced yesterday, interest rates remain on hold, pretty much as widely predicted. With inflation figures now set to stay low (and even go lower as lower priced oil and food continue to feed through to prices), it is even less likely for rates to rise in 2007. Another factor putting downward pressure on interest rates is the high Aussie dollar (raising rates might push the dollar higher creating more problems for exporters, making imports cheaper - which could also lower inflation.)

However, also announced yesterday was a stronger than expected GDP growth (national income) of 3.8% year on year - which could put an interest rate rise back on the table if the RBA believed the economy needed reining in. With so much conflicting economic data, it would be difficult to guess what will happen from here.
