| aussiehome.com traffic - another record - 292,000 visitors in March |
A year ago a real estate agency group (not one of our clients) screamed forth from some newspaper ad that its web site had "One Million Hits Last Month!!!".
Sounds great (if a bit implausible) until you consider that a "hit" to a web site is every piece of graphic, text, download... so ONE visitor to ONE page could register 50+ "hits". One million hits may be no more than 10,000 visitors (and as this was for a group of 40+ offices, that was perhaps nothing to scream about ...).
A Hit is therefore a meaningless statistic - if you see anyone using it as a measure of web site traffic, run for the hills. Slow-loading sites with loads of graphics will (by definition) measure loads of hits!
Last month, aussiehome.com smashed through previous traffic records with 292,473 visitors (yes, actual visitors) to the site. That was 30,000 more visitors than our previous record in January this year. These visitors looked at 12 million pages. No less than 920 other web sites referred visitors to our site.
For your information we measured over 23 million hits (meaningless stat!) and 83% of users used Windows XP as their operating system (just to show how dominant Microsoft are these days). |
| Advertise yourself in the property search results |
Many of you have been asking us how you can make yourself "more visible" on the aussiehome.com site, especially in these times of short supply.
A few months ago we added a free "Find an Agent" page on the site, and we've been selling out the "Property of the Week" now almost every week. We also added a full page for each rep on the system (just click on your name on our site to view).
A new service we are launching this week is have individual AGENTS (sales reps) come up within the suburb search of their choice. This will be on the 1st come, best dressed policy and we will closely monitor its progress, and feedback from the public and our clients.
The RULES:
1. No more than 3 reps will appear in any one suburb 2. Their appearance/position will be totally random on each search 3. Your ad is the same height and width as a normal property ad, with your photo, some text, agency logo and link to your own page on our site 4. One rep can only buy one suburb in any one month 5. No agency office can buy more than one spot in any one suburb 6. If there are spots available in your chosen suburb for the subsequent month, you can book again, otherwise you wait your turn to get back in (we must be fair to all). 7. A booking system will exist with our Sales Manager, Phil Knight, and so you are encouraged to book as quickly as possible with him 8. COST = $110 incl GST for a whole month, per suburb
BOOK HERE to place your order: we need to know your month and suburb. We then do the rest. |
| Google Earth on your site |
Last month we introduced you to the amazing technology of 'Google Earth' - and mentioned how we could place the technology on your site. Already some of you have taken up this idea, and we are busy developing this system for you.
How it works:
A link is added to your property pages on your web site You plot the properties on the Google Earth map Visitors to your site can zoom into your properties and fly over the suburbs seeing all your listings, plotted on aerial maps.
It is just out of this world (except it isn't, it's OF this world - literally).
CLICK HERE to get this amazing Google Earth on your site, and this month we are having a SPECIAL - see 'Offers' in the right hand column. |
| History of the Internet - part 3 - DNS |
The ARPANET was the forerunner of today's Internet, set up by Advanced Research Agency in 1968; Ray Tomlinson then invented email in 1971, and then the 3rd major breakthrough on the road to what we now know as web pages, was made in 1983...
Last year, Paul Mockapetris, chief scientist of Nominum, (see photo) received a lifetime achievement award for contribution to information technology.
Paul is widely known and respected for his role in the creation (23 years ago) of the 'Domain Name System' (DNS), while working at the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute.
The DNS is fundamental to the Internet, powering all web-based applications; from a simple email and web look-up, through to VoIP phone calls.
The Domain Name System (DNS) translates names like www.aussiehome.com into numerical addresses that routers can understand, and lies at the heart of every user experience with the Internet.
How would you feel trying to remember a web address such as 213.45.5.16 instead of your own domain name (or "URL" - universal resource locator)?
In receiving his lifetime achievenment award, Paul Mockapetris, said "It is especially poignant to receive this award at a time when the Internet is impacting on society like never before. While the Internet has come a long way there is still much to do in terms of making the network more useful and secure.
Next month: the story of html, the 'hyper text meta language' that brought with it the 'world wide web'. |
