MyHome shuts down

The demise of myhome.com.auJust over a year ago PBL Media (Packer) brought out their real estate web site, MyHome.com.au, which together with their #1 car site (carsales.com.au) and #1 job site (seek.com.au) meant they had the full 'rivers of gold' complement of online sites. They even gave the site a leg up with a TV programme of the same name on Channel Nine. How could it fail I hear you scream?

Well, last Friday MyHome.com.au was shut down. Reports suggested they had spent A$20m or more on development and marketing, and yet failed to make much impact. When they asked aussiehome.com to feed to them, we asked how many of our clients wanted to be on? As far as we know, none of our clients ever were.

So why did a large media company with a history of successful online venturing fail so spectacularly?

  1. They were late into the market (most other players, such as us, have been doing this for 8 years or more)
  2. They offered little that was 'new' or different
  3. Real estate agencies did not need another real estate web site
  4. The site itself was confusing and 'technology-driven'
  5. They failed to get sufficient content (even in one market) to provide an adequate selection of properties for home searchers.

There were also rumours of management issues (three management teams in 18 months), and even with Microsoft as an investor, the MyHome.com.au story perhaps demonstrates how mature the online real estate industry in Australia is and what a tough nut it is to crack. All power to the incumbents.

rent.com.au deal

Could your company handle more properties to manage? We presume it wouldn't hurt ...

Rent.com.au offerwww.rent.com.au has grown successfully over the last year and it is currently being promoted on Perth radio. It now includes features that generate landlord listing enquiries, including the recent launch of their associated site www.propertymanager.com.au.

We recommend the 50% discount being offered to aussiehome.com clients, $99 per month for 12 months. We will continue to feed your rental listings (there is no feed fee from us), so there will be nothing for you to do except enjoy the leads from this fast-growing site.

Testimonial  > " 5 of the [6] leads generated through your web site [rent.com.au] have been converted to clients now and we may not have got these if it was not for your web site. Once again, Well done." (Karen Williams, Best Benchmark Property Management, also an aussiehome.com client)"

One lucky new Perth subscriber will also win $16,000 of 96FM radio advertising!

Record Traffic on aussiehome.com

Traffic to aussiehome.com soared in May sending total visitors over 368,000.

Lots of stats on sites are bandied around - unique visitors, unique browsers, visitors, page views, hits... they all mean different things.

Our Stat: Views per Property counts the number of times each property is viewed per month on average.

PageViews - 1.1 million

Properties - 8,000

Views/Property - 138 times

Ask any other site what their equivalent stat is (WA property views that is, not WA folks looking elsewhere).

Improvements in May

You asked for it, so we've coded it!

GO LIVE: you can now add a property but choose NOT for it to go live on the web until you are ready for it to do so.

Add photos, review the text, then hit GO LIVE NOW to send it out on the property alerts, feeds to other sites and up on the web.

NEW PRICE - you can flag any property this way to alert web users to a change in price. This shows in green on aussiehome.com, and we can also code your site in the much the same way. Ask us if you would like this.

New Property page - you may have noticed the extra photos and redesign of the aussiehome.com property page.

No double ups please!

A recent check on aussiehome.com found several properties entered more than once (in more than one suburb). Apart from REBA rules, we also get complaints from the public, users and other clients about this practice. It also messes up the mapping and feeds to other sites. All other real estate websites ban this practice. If we allowed it, our site would go downhill fast.

From June 2008 onwards, we will be hiding any property that has been entered twice on our site (it will show on yours if you want); remember the '5 surrounding suburbs' search will show all properties in neghbouring suburbs anyway. A property can only ever be located in ONE suburb. Thanks for your understanding.

Low Slung gets slung

Annoyed with low slung jean wearing types?

Low Slung jeans in Louisiana are outlawed

A law banning them as obscene has been passed by a town council in Louisiana, with fines of up to US$255 or six months in jail for those caught revealing their underwear.

As you can see from the photo, it's all getting a bit out of hand! (as well as out of trouser) All those that think we need the same rule hear, say 'I' !
