Valerie Haskins from Haskins Settlements wrote this great reply to our 'What's in a Name?' article last month - this you have GOT to read...! Need an answer to all those pesky companies that ring offering cheap advertising, phones, photocopiers, computers etc? Then create a fake employee! For years I have suffered the indignity of people calling me Donna, how you get 'Donna' from 'Valerie' is beyond me but it happens on a regular basis. One of those pesky companies rang and asked for the name of the owner. Carol advised them 'Valerie Haskins', they heard 'Donna Tasker' and as such 'Donna Tasker' was created. Donna now gets loads of mail and telephone calls and no, they don't want to speak to 'Valerie Haskins' - they have to speak to Donna because she is the person that makes the decisions! Donna doesn't work very often, her kids are always sick and she's often at funerals. She even resigned once because she was so stressed from all the calls she was getting and for a while after that message got out, the calls stopped. We then created 'Barry Dobonosovich' and as the callers couldn't spell let alone say his name, he didn't get too many calls. All was quiet on the telemarketing front until some six months ago a letter arrived from Australia Post addressed to 'Donna Tasker', and it all started again. She's even received an application from American Express to apply for a credit card which we have been tempted to fill it out and send it back however the fear of committing a 'real' fraud has prevented us from taking this practical joke one step further. The mail sits un-open in Donna's tray until the day she actually turns up for work, she's such a lazy woman!!!! Brilliant stuff Valerie - a bottle of red for you!
