March/April 2010

Welcome to the first enewsletter edition of What's New at What Scratch? It's been a busy start to 2010 with the past two months flying by in a blur of moving boxes, new staff and franchisees!

We moved into our new premises in Dellamarta Road, Wangara last month and are unpacking the last of the boxes from the storage unit. As you will see below, we've had two new What Scratch? staff join the team with Shaun Dale in the full-time role of Field Support Technician and Tanya Sneddon working part-time as our Production Manager. Ed Bitao started in January as the Victoria Park franchisee and Bob Jongen took on the Rockingham territory in February (more about Bob next edition).

The response to the 50 Customers Milestone Celebration has been great and we can't wait to enjoy the night with you all. There's sure to be plenty happening for the remainder of the year and we look forward to keeping you informed!

Team Racks Up the Customer Tally
The What Scratch? dealership customer tally this week now totals 51. Congratulations to everyone that has contributed to the tally by actively seeking out new yards and servicing them. A dealership is included in the tally once it has been invoiced in two consecutive months.

A night of mystery celebration will be held on Saturday March 27 to mark the grand occasion. Well done team!

Ed Swaps from Computers to Cars

Ed BitaoThe constant brain drain has been replaced by an even mix of physical and brain drain for Ed Bitao since he began at What Scratch? as the Victoria Park franchisee.

Prior to What Scratch? Ed spent his days in front of a computer running a small IT business updating websites and content management systems. Ed and partner Gwen are still working at night in the business with their graphic design business partner.

'Gwen helps out in the business but her role as house director is a full-time job,' Ed said.

Ed and Gwen have two daughters Sasha aged 6 and Ashley 2.5 years.

Current customers in Ed's territory include United Auto Prestige, Burswood Honda, Auto Classics and Duncan Nissan.

'I'd like to be able to employ people one day once I've grown the business and eventually be able to sell it,' Ed said.

Ed is looking forward to tackling John Hughes and a few other yards in his territory in the near future.

Shaun on Board to Help Out Franchisees

Shaun DaleThere isn't much Shaun Dale doesn't know about the motor vehicle spraying industry - he's been working in it since he was 15 years of age. Shaun became a full time employee of What Scratch? in the role of Field Support Technician in February primarily to assist franchisees when they're in need of help or advice.

Shaun completed his apprenticeship at Auto Craft Smash in Myaree and more recently has worked in his own business, Mirror Finish, working on show cars.

'It was great experience because it required fastidious, spot on work, sometimes working for days on one car,' Shaun said.

Shaun and partner Holly have a daughter, Kaelyn, aged 8 months and working seven days a week didn't suit the young family so Shaun jumped at the opportunity of working with What Scratch?

Shaun says he's keen to help out the franchisees as there's nothing he can't fix!

'I'm really looking forward to moving on with the company and not staying stagnant in the one spot,' Shaun said.

Tanya Takes on the New Office

Tanya SneddonTanya Sneddon began work at What Scratch? just as the new premises were opened and she's been unpacking boxes ever since.

Working around cars certainly isn't new to Tanya as she worked as a staff trainer for Shell and then a wholesale company completing car licensing in the early days of her working life. More recently Tanya has been far removed from the industry running a home based waxing business which she has continued in the evenings.

Tanya works Thursdays and Fridays in head office as Production Manager pulling together all the components for new kits, handling re-ordered kit parts, picking up the mail, banking and general running around that needs to be done.

Tanya and husband George have three girls Katie aged 11, Georgia 9 and Tara 6.

'I was looking for something else now that my youngest is off to school and this role offers plenty of variety which I really enjoy. I'm looking forward to growing with the company,' Tanya said.

What Scratch? Donation Makes a Difference
What Scratch? has made its latest $1,000 franchise donation to another worthy cause, the Beldon/Iluka Uniting Church Kids Hope mentoring program. The World Vision initiative assists disadvantaged children by providing them with a mentor that visits the child at school for one hour each week. The mentor spends time with the child doing an activity they enjoy such as crafts, games, painting or helping with their school work. The Uniting Church was thrilled with the donation and said it will allow mentors to purchase items for the activities they do with the children.

If you know of other good causes that you would like What Scratch? to support, please pass on the details to Dale.
