April 2010

Hello!

In my first two months with NAPCAN, I continue to be impressed by what NAPCAN achieves and the dedication of our staff, volunteers and community supporters.  Our programs help showcase best practice within the sector and decision makers are taking on board our ideas on preventing child abuse.

Hopefully after reading our latest advocacy newsletter you will be equally inspired to help spread the message about preventing child abuse.

National Attitudinal Survey

We are pleased to report that the results of our national survey to guage community attitudes to child abuse and neglect are in. A huge thanks to all 21,000 of you who completed the survey last year. We are now reviewing the results and expect to release them soon. Watch this space!

SOSO

Cyber safety continues to be a key concern for most Australians. We are very excited by the inroads we are making through our SOSO (Smart Online Safe Offline) campaign. SOSO is the only Australian initiative operating within the online space and social networking sites that raises awareness and educates kids about how to be smart online and safe offline in a relevant and engaging way.

And we seem to be getting through to kids, according to our recent external evaluation of our anti-cyber bullying campaign. Our “Cyber Bullying – Bystander Behaviour” uses a YouTube video and educational game called “Web Warriors”. The evaluation shows we have had a significant impact on intended behaviour change with:

  • Over 80% of online Australians between the ages of 10 and 15 have had the opportunity to see our SOSO campaign.
  • Around 9 in 10 of those who actually took notice of our SOSO cyber bullying campaign thought it had had an impact on how they felt about cyber bullying and made them more aware of the effect of cyber bullying on others.
  • About 79,000 clicks were made on our “Cyber Bullying – Bystander Behaviour” YouTube video.
  • About 71,000 clicks were made on our Web Warriors page, with 8,628 kids registering to undertake the game and 48% completing it.

The success of our SOSO campaign is also being recognised in great industry reviews and coverage and website awards. In fact, we are really excited that we have just been shortlisted as a finalist in the Webby Awards (pretty big!). To get the award people need to vote. Winning this award will help secure more funding so we can continue to develop SOSO and broaden its reach. All you have to do is click here and sign up, and then you can vote.

NAPCAN engaging parliamentarians

In February and March,  Alanna Hector (NAPCAN's National Manager, Policy and Advocacy) and I went to see federal parliamentarians to present NAPCAN’s views on ways to prevent child abuse and neglect.

We had individual meetings with Ministers, MPs and Senators. In addition, we helped organise the first two PACAN (Parliamentarians Against Child Abuse and Neglect) briefings for 2010, in Parliament House. Thanks to PACAN Co-Convenors, Senator Catryna Bilyk and Senator Helen Kroger, parliamentarians were able to hear from experts and discuss the important issues of:

  • Cyber safety Our speaker was world champion yachtsman and Olympic medalist, Mr John Bertrand AM. He is Chairman of the Alannah and Madeline Foundation, which is embarking on an “e-smart” program, helping schools to create a cultural norm of smart, safe and responsible use of communications technologies. This work complements NAPCAN’s work in this space – through SOSO (see above).
  • The “shared parenting” provisions of the Family Law Act - Our three expert speakers helped enormously to raise politicians’ awareness of the unintended impact on children and babies of the shared parenting laws. Each speaker presented a different perspective: Professor Richard Chisholm AM (former Family Court judge and author of the Family Courts Violence Review), Dr Sue Packer (paediatrician and NAPCAN Board Member) and Associate Professor Jennifer McIntosh (Developmental Psychologist).

At the State level, our Queensland office has been particularly busy showing parliamentarians child abuse prevention programs. Where NAPCAN has a program in a particular constituency, we have taken the MP or Senator out to visit the program.  We are even taking a Minister out to visit a supported playgroup! The visits have shown politicians how child abuse can be prevented. Also, NAPCAN is finding out what action decision makers are taking on the issue.

Inquiry into Northern Territory Emergency Response (NTER)

The Senate Inquiry examining Minister Macklin’s welfare reform proposals (expanding the NTER) published its report on 10 March. The Report recommends that the Senate pass the Government's bills. You can read the full Inquiry report here and NAPCAN’s submission to the Inquiry on our website here.

Family Violence Inquiry

The Australian Law Reform Commission is currently conducting a Family Violence Inquiry. Please read the terms of reference here. You can contribute with a comment and/or a formal submission (due early June) here.

NAPCAN resources

Over the last 24 years, NAPCAN has distributed in excess of 20 million resources across Australia.  The resources are highly valued by all who use them, whether they be professionals working with families or parents and carers. Like any behaviour-changing tool, NAPCAN's resources are most effective when they are used with complementary interventions.

Our most popular resources are available to order from our online store here.
