Residents who have had a baby between March 2008 and April 2009 can plant a special tree to mark the birth of their child. As well as a living reminder for parents, grandparents and children, the tree planting is another way of greening our Shire.
Each Winter families are invited to a short ceremony to plant a tree, marked with a plaque, to welcome their child, often the wider family joins with Mum and Dad at the ceremony and families can visit their special tree and watch it grow as their children grow.

Madjitil Moorna Choir to Travel to Halls Creek
The Shire of Kalamunda has always been one of innovation, community spirit and a desire to continue to flourish and grow. Its residents have a long history of commitment to community development, which is evident by the number of very successful ?grass roots? community based organisations within the Shire. However no one expected what was to come next, in a bridging of communities for the greater good. In May 2009 the Madjitil Moorna Choir, as part of Zig Zag Community Arts, will travel from Perth to Halls Creek for a unique project built around cultural exchange, spirit and wonder.
Shire of Kalamunda CEO James Trail said, "The Shire is thrilled to support Madjitil Moorna and I would like to congratulate all of the choir members on their involvement and hard work to date. The concept is one of true innovation, community sprit and togetherness."
The project will focus on promoting positive self-esteem and good health through the healing power of singing together in Aboriginal languages as well as English. School children, young mums, disengaged young people, elders and families will have access to the choir during the week which will be timetabled by the school.
Choir Coordinator Jo Randell said, "I am convinced that money is not the answer, it?s motivation and human resources that are needed in Halls Creek, to lift the community, to model healthy ways of living, to help address the gap in opportunity for people in remote communities."
"The project was initiated by a Halls Creek aboriginal teacher, Doreen Green and will be guided by her to be aware of cultural sensitivities and to be appropriate to the needs of her community. I would like to thank all of the supporters, businesses the Halls Creek District High School, Healthway, the Department of Indigenous Affairs and the Shire of Kalamunda."
Led by Aboriginal musical directors, Della Rae Morrison and George Walley the choir will teach songs, learn local songs, and write new songs, which will then be performed with the children and their families for the whole town. At the end of a week of workshops the group will travel to Kununurra to perform in the high profile indigenous concert, the Barramundi Concert as part of the Ord Valley Muster.
