Welcome to the first issue of the Sportsview E-Newsletter.

The purpose of the Sportsview E-Newsletter is to keep WASF members informed about current developments in sport and recreation. We trust you will find it relevant and useful. We encourage and welcome your comments.  Please send any ideas and contributions for future issues to info@wasportsfed.asn.au

Initially we aim to circulate the E-Newsletter every two months.

WASF New Website

The Western Australian Sports Federation (Inc) website www.wasportsfed.asn.au has a new look with easier navigation and improved accessibility.

One of the new features on the website is the ABC News Sport Section where you can be kept up-to-date with all the latest sporting news.

Australian Sports Federation Alliance

The Western Australian Sports Federation (Inc) and its Alliance partners at state and territory level recently met in Perth to discuss a wide range of issues impacting on sport across the country.

Highlights of the discussion included:

  • Junior Sport Tax Deductibility proposal
  • Climate change and the potential impact on sport
  • The social agendas of Governments' and the opportunities and consequences for sport
  • Policies on drugs in sport
  • Current sport and recreation facility provision and planning for future needs
  • Organisational governance and management matters
  • Confederation of Australian Sport 2007 Federal Election Policy Platform

Next WASF Council Meeting 14th August 2007

The guest speaker for the next WASF Council Meeting will be Dr. David Deeley, Parks & Leisure Australia (WA), who will be talking about "Water Conservation and its consequences for Sport".

Associations Incorporation Green Bill 2006

The State Government is reviewing the Associations Incorporations Act 1987.  Changes are being proposed to the rules and regulations governing incorporated associations. The changes are designed to streamline regulations and promote efficiency and accountability of all associations incorporated in Western Australia.

The proposed changes have been released for public comment and approximately 300 submissions about the Associations Incorporation Green Bill have been received. The WA Sports Federation has lodged a submission (No. 295) that can be found online at www.docep.wa.gov.au 

 

 

GRANTS

  Healthy Club Sponsorships Summer 2007-2008

Healthway, in conjunction with Sports Medicine Australia (WA Branch), is pleased to announce the availability of 2007/2008 Summer Healthy Club sponsorships, for sports clubs wishing to make the local sporting environment healthier.

Incorporated Clubs playing in a recognised sporting competition over the summer of 2007/08 may apply for up to $2500 worth of initiatives that address health issues within the club. Examples are smoking, nutrition, alcohol, injury prevention, specific education and training initiatives. To obtain guidelines and an application form, visit Sports Medicine Australia's website at www.smawa.asn.au or contact (08) 9258 8033. Please note only incorporated sporting clubs are eligible to apply.

Sport and Recreation Facility Grant

Applications are now open for the 2008/09 funding round of the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF). This grant is for not-for-profit sport, recreation or community groups and local government authorities seeking capital works grants to develop sport and recreation facilities. Funds for Community Sport

Organisations within Western Australia now have the opportunity to obtain funding they need to achieve their sport or recreation vision.

The Department of Sport and Recreation's (DSR) Community Grants Scheme provides local government and community organisations with funding to implement projects which increase participation in physical activity. The scheme also supports people development within the sport and recreation industry, aiming to enhance the skills of service providers.  Main target populations for the scheme include youth, Indigenous people, women, seniors and people with disabilities.

Round one and two of the scheme offer amounts between $1,000 to $20,000, with grants ranging from $20,000 to $50,000 offered in round one exclusively.

CONGRATULATIONS TO NETBALL WA

Netball WA Chief Executive Officer, Lisa Bradock, is very pleased that Netball WA is one of the Australian licensees for the 2008 inaugural Tasman Trophy competition.

"Were looking forward to launching into the new competition and will be extremely competitive in this environment," she said.

Perth Orioles Coach Sue Gaudion said "I'm glad the appropriate decision was made". While it hasn't interfered with our preparation this season, its certainly settling to know there is an exciting future ahead for elite netball in Western Australia."

The other four states who will be representing Australia in the Tasman Trophy are New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Victoria.

The Tasman Trophy competition will feature teams from across Australia and New Zealand, with 69 games played over 17 weeks, from April 2008. For more information and updates go to www.netballwa.com.au

Active 07 - 'On Common Ground' Sport and Recreation Industry Conference

The Department of Sport and Recreation's annual conference will be held at the Burswood Entertainment Centre on 18-19 October 2007. Topics for this years conference include: recreation centre management, workplace physical activity and on common ground which includes demographics, climate change, the workplace, what youth want, the rise of extreme sports and sports betting.
