CAPANS Launch

The 2008 Child and Adolescent Physical Activity and Nutrition Survey (CAPANS) was launched on 29 June 2010 at Morley Senior High School.  CAPANS was commissioned by the Physical Activity Taskforce in 2008 and data was collected by Edith Cowan University.

Sport and Recreation Minister and Chair of the Physical Activity Taskforce Hon. Terry Waldron released the final report outlining the physical activity levels, dietary habits and body size results of 1,827 students from schools across WA.

Key findings from the 2008 CAPANS include:

  • Less than half of WA children interviewed met the recommended physical activity guidelines.
  • Secondary school girls were least active with only 10% meeting the recommended physical activity guidelines.
  • The majority of children reported participating in more than two hours of screen-based recreation on one or more days of the previous week.
  • Boys reported playing movement-based video games as their most common active play activity.

Catalyst Project

WA Sports Federation worked in partnership with Womensport West, the Department of Sport and Recreation in conjunction with Australian Womensport & Recreation Association to deliver the 'Catalyst Project' in WA.

During May and June workshop and networking opportunities in Perth and the Wheatbelt town of Merredin were conducted to increase awareness, knowledge and confidence to work with the media.  Media representatives attended each event to enable invaluable relationship opportunities.

The Social Media Networking Event held at the Department of Sport and Recreation on 10 June offered participants the opportunity to hear from a range of guest speakers about the different types of social media and how to use it within their broader communication strategies.  Questions of the expert panel gave attendees a further opportunity to extend their understanding.  Panel members included:

  • Gareth Parker, Deputy Online Editor - The West Australian
  • David Christison, GIACD Director - CEA Pty Ltd (The NCS Group)
  • Peter Fletcher, PhD student - Curtin University
  • Geoff White, Multimedia Coordinator - Department of Sport and Recreation

The Catalyst Project, funded by the Australian Government through the Women's Leadership and Development Program, also enabled the Australian Womensport & Recreation Association to produce a range of media and PR resources available for you to access on their website.  To view this information click here.
