ANZ Sports Star Awards

The 2008 ANZ Sports Star Awards were successfully staged on Thursday 8 January 2009, at the Astral Room, Burswood Entertainment Compex.

603 people attended the Awards that showcased the high achievers of WA sport - athletes, administrators, officials and coaches. The guests included Emerging Regional Smarter than Smoking Junior Sports Stars and their families.

There were eight Awards presented during the evening, with the winners and finalists listed here.

Congratulations to Steven Hooker (pictured above with Chris Wharton - The West Australian, John Atkins - ANZ and Hon. Terry Waldron MLA) who won the 2008 The West Australian ANZ Sports Star Award.

Raelene Lyon (pictured below with Rachel Cosentino, Gibson & Gibson Lawyers) , a diving official named the 2008 Gibson & Gibson Official of the Year, described the evening as,

"a fantastic event. The Awards provided the forum to catch up with old collegues and sports friends".

The Awards showcased a special year in sport, with 2008 being an Olympic and Paralympic year.

Henk Vogels, winner of the 2008 Skilled Service to Sport Award, told us,

"I was very surprised to win the Award. I would like to thank Cycling WA as I would not have been able to achieve this Award without the other people involved in Cycling WA to support me".

The 2008 ANZ Sports Star Awards provided the opportunity to celebrate, reflect and look forward to the sporting achievements in WA. WA Sports Federation is grateful to the numerous sponsors and organisations that generously contributed to the successful preparation and staging of the Awards.

WA Sports Federation working with Find Thirty every day

WA Sports Federation has been working with the Find Thirty® every day Team to identify and highlight the benefits of being involved in a sport or active recreation club or organisation.

Stories of people who have, or are attempting to increase their physical activity levels can provide motivation to others. The promotion of ‘real life’ stories, focusing on the benefits and rewards of finding thirty every day, will hopefully increase the number of West Australians finding thirty every day.

Please fill out the short questionnaire and return it to findthirtyeveryday@heartfoundation.org.au or post to The Find Thirty Team, PO Box 1133, Subiaco WA 6904 by Wednesday 11 February.

If you have any further questions about this please contact Helen Cunningham, helencunningham@wasportsfed.asn.au or 9387 8100.
