WASF News

WASF held a Special Meeting on Tuesday 17 June to resolve the proposed changes to the Constitution. The WASF members unanimously voted in favor of the proposed amended Constitution.

Associations Incorporation Bill

WASF was invited by The Department of Consumer and Employment Protection (DoCEP) to participate in the recent review of the draft model rules for the Associations Incorporation Bill.

It is currently proposed to amend the Bill:

  • To remove the requirement for associations to appoint a public officer;
  • To introduce two tier auditing requirements (instead of three) where audits will only be required for associations that have an annual income greater than $500,000; and
  • To remove the assets test in respect of auditing requirements.

Associations will be able to decide their own auditing requirements, if any, if they are below the $500,000 income threshold.  Naturally any auditing requirements imposed by way of contract with a funding body will still have to be adhered to no matter what income the association receives.

Although Tier 1 associations will not be required to provide the Commissioner with their financial records each year, they will be required to provide a statement assuring the Commissioner that their financial accounts have been kept in an auditable manner.  They will also be required to provide a solvency statement assuring the Commissioner that the association can pay its bills as and when they fall due.

DoCEP has also given a commitment to review the level of penalties in the Bill to ensure they are broadly consistent with other State jurisdictions.

The new Bill is expected to be introduced in the Parliament by the Minister for Consumer Protection by the end of 2008.

If you require further information visit DoCEP website, which will be updated http://www.docep.wa.gov.au/index.htm

WA Smallbore Rifle Association

Robyn Van Nus recently became Western Australia’s first ever member of an Australian Olympic Rifle Shooting Team.

Robyn’s milestone achievement was finally announced after her original unannounced nomination by selectors in the Beijing Olympics Shooting Team was followed by an appeal process against their decision.

The West Australian Smallbore Rifle Association (WASRA) congratulates Robyn on her successful selection which comes as they celebrate their 50th Anniversary as a sport in WA.

WASRA also takes this opportunity to thank WAIS for their continued support and encouragement provided to Robyn in her four year quest for Olympic selection .

When Robyn competed in the Target Rifle Australia National Championships, in Perth earlier this year, she successfully defended her National Air Rifle and Three Position titles won in Brisbane in 2007 and added another couple of gold medals along the way.

Robyn’s selection also comes on the back of some outstanding personal performances in Europe earlier this year.

In November 2007 Robyn became Oceania Women’s 3 Position Champion which earned an Olympic quota for Australia.  Robyn has also acted as an inspiration for fellow West Australian, Tyren Vitler, who became the Oceania Junior Air Rifle Champion. Tyren has his sights set on the 2010 Commonwealth Games and 2012 Olympic Team.

WARSA hope Robyn can now become the first Australian rifle shooter to return with an Olympic medal following recent Olympic successes of Michael Diamond, Russel Mark and Suzanne Balogh in Clay Target and Anne marrie Forder in Pistol.

If you would like further information about Robyn or WA Smallbore Rifle Association see http://www.wasra.asn.au/

WASF congratulates and wishes all competing athletes, coaches and officials a most rewarding and memorable experience at the Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Safe Clubs 4 Kids

Safe Clubs 4 Kids is a pilot project that has seen Western Australian Sports Federation (WASF), the Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR), Surf Lifesaving WA and WA Police work in partnership to develop and deliver a training package to clubs on the important matter of child protection.

Safe Clubs 4 Kids is a proactive pilot project, offering sporting clubs the tools and resources needed to provide safe environments for their members.  The partnership of agencies involved in this pilot is a major strength of the project.

The project has been based on Surf Life Saving’s existing Nipper Safe program and made applicable to all sports.

Football West, Netball WA and WA Football Commission are all involved in the Safe Clubs 4 Kids project, which consists of two stages.

The first stage involves people in each sport trained to deliver the Safe Clubs 4 Kids training workshop to clubs. The second stage involves these trained presenters delivering the training to clubs.

DSR Director General Ron Alexander said the aim of the project was to increase awareness of child protection and reinforce that it was everyone’s responsibility to keep children safe.

“Participation in sport and recreation is an important and beneficial part of childhood, and the sport and recreation industry has an ethical obligation to provide a safe environment for children, ” Mr Alexander said.

“DSR, WASF, Surf Life Saving WA and the WA Police are committed to minimising the risk to children in the community and providing programs and services that contribute to the development of safer environments for our children.”

WASF CEO Rob Thompson said most people who volunteered to work with children did so to help them enjoy their experiences and reach their potential.

“These people make a positive contribution in the lives of children in the community and we should recognise and value their work,” Mr Thompson said.
