XII FINA World Masters Championships 2008

The XII FINA World Masters Championships held in Perth between 15 – 25 April 2008, was not only a huge success because 94 year old Mikio Nagaoka swam brilliantly but also because of the $10-12 million the event poured into the WA economy.

One of the fascinating statistics of the championships was the 74-year spread of competitors. Canadian Jennifer Beckwith was the youngest at 20 in synchronised swimming while Japan’s backstroking Nagaoka was the oldest at 94.

The championships were full of amazing stories such as Rebecca Perrott who more than 20 years after winning a Commonwealth Gold provided one of the highlights of the Championships by bettering that time to win gold again. The leading record breaker was South African Timothy Shead in the 55-59 group with an amazing four world records.

“We are very proud to have had the opportunity to host such an amazing world championships,” Graham Partridge, Western Australian Sports Centre Trust Board Chairman, said. “We have set a very high benchmark for the next championships in Gothenburg, Sweden in 2010.”
