Thank You ASCP Annual Meeting Contributors

The leadership and staff of the ASCP Foundation are extremely grateful to all the generous donors and sponsors who contributed to the Foundation during ASCP's 37th Annual Meeting and Exhibition in Phoenix last month. Total contributions from individuals, ASCP chapters, and companies exceeded $168,000, making this an outstandingly successful annual meeting for the ASCP Foundation.

Annual Meeting Donor Matching Program

We extend special thanks to Innovatix for matching $7,500 in donations received during the annual meeting. This marks the seventh consecutive ASCP convention that Innovatix has matched donations made by conference attendees.

The Wall of Caring

Also for the seventh consecutive ASCP convention, the Johnson & Johnson Long Term Care Group donated $5,000 to the ASCP Foundation ~ $5 for every signature (up to 1,000) on the Signatures That Care wall located in the Johnson & Johnson Health Care Companies exhibit booth. We thank the Johnson & Johnson Long Term Care Group for its ongoing generosity as well as all the annual meeting attendees who signed the wall.

Phootloose in PhoenixUniversity of Connecticut pharmacy students joined ASCP President Bob Miller (right), Sean Jeffery (back center), and their wives for a toast during Phootloose in Phoenix.

On the evening of November 16, approximately 140 friends of the ASCP Foundation gathered at the Phoenix Art Museum for Phootloose in Phoenix, a special event that netted approximately $100,000 for the Foundation. It was a festive evening of fantastic food, friendly conversation, and lively entertainment, and it honored the Foundation's 2006 Pacesetters donor club members and donors to The Tim Webster Endowment.

Website on Improving Medication Adherence Launched

If medication nonadherence were a disease, it could be termed an epidemic.

Medication nonadherence is responsible for:

  • 10% of older adult hospital admissions.
  • 25% of nursing home admissions.
  • 20% of preventable adverse drug events among older persons in the ambulatory setting.
  • 125,000 deaths annually.
  • $100 billion per year in healthcare costs in the U.S.

www.AdultMeducation.com is a new website containing:

  • Information on factors that influence medication adherence, barriers to adherence, and strategies to improve adherence.
  • Tools to identify older adults at risk for medication nonadherence.
  • Resources to improve medication adherence.
  • Materials to educate older adults about the importance of medication adherence.
  • Educational programs targeted at community-based service providers and health professionals.
  • Links to other useful web resources.

Materials on the website can be downloaded and printed for use in educational or training programs.

Adult Meducation was developed through a collaboration between the ASCP Foundation and the American Society on Aging. Funding was provided by Pfizer Inc.

 Happy Holidays!

Use Your IRA to Make a Contribution

The recently enacted Pension Protection Act of 2006 allows those 70½ or older to make a direct distribution of up to $100,000 from an IRA to any qualified charity, including the ASCP Foundation. Under the Act, this direct distribution is not recognized as income and is not taxable.

This new and attractive way to make a charitable gift to the ASCP Foundation is available only during 2006 and 2007. To take advantage of this tax-saving opportunity for 2006, the distribution must be made by December 31.
