Opportunities to contribute to publications still available

Members of the Institute are still able to indicate their willingness to be involved in the authoring of new Institute publications.
Contributors are sought for two new publications, one dealing with cracking in concrete and the other with insitu and post installed anchorage sytems.
Interested members are asked to contact the Institute's national office by 31 May 2007 for further details.

The Reinforcement Detailing Handbook, the Institute's most recent release continues to meet with strong demand from industry professionals, the academic sector and students.  The publication has been picked up by a number of academic institutions and is being sold through book shops in Universities and through the TAFE network.
The handbook may be ordered on-line or click on the image to the right to download an order form for copies at the special introductory price for Institute members of $48.00 including GST and postage.  This offer will last till the end of June at which time all orders will need to be placed through Standards Australia/SAI Global.  The Standards Australia/SAI Global book shop may be reached through the Institute's web site at http://www.concreteinstitute.com.au/.  Just go to the Institute Publications section.

Contributions to Concrete in Australia magazine always welcome

Submission for inclusion of material in Concrete in Australia magazine are always welcome. So far this year 2 editions of the magazine have been published and the third, Volume 33 Issue 1 is now in final preparation for printing and distribution to members.  We expect an early June delivery date.
Project features, new products, technical papers and news items may be submitted direct to the Institute's national office.  Bob Jackson, the magazine's editor is available to assist with compiling articles.  Often just a few details are enough to provide the starting point for a great story.
The Institute's committee responsible for the publication is convened by Fred Andrews-Phaedonos (VicRoads) and he works with Stephen Evans (Hanson) and Rob Wheen (Sydney University) to develop the magazine to ensure it meets members needs.  Committee members may be contacted through the national office if there is anything you would like to discuss regarding Concrete in Australia.
Advertising opportunities are also available and preferential rates are available for member companies, especially if they committ to a schedule.  Contact Ian Booth at the national office for further details in relation to this or any other Institute magazine or publishing activity.

Institute celebrates three anniversaries in May

Three anniversary dates of importance to the Institute all fall in May.
Firstly, the Institute was incorporated on 21 May 1970 so it has now entered its 38th year as an incorporated body.  The organisation continues to grow and this is due in no small part to those who worked tirelessly in the late 60s and early 70s to establish the Institute.
The first year of the Institute occupying its own premises at Rhodes in Sydney's inner Western suburbs has just passed.  The Institute moved to its new premises in order to accommodate an increase in staff and to better service an expanding range of initiatives for members.
And finally, Nicole Raymond, the Institute's Membership Co-ordinator has clocked up her first year with the Institute.  Nicole has brought a wealth of talent and enthusiasm to her role and the continued increase in membership numbers is testament to her abilities.  That is Nicole to the right.

ACI distributes Honorary Member's latest title

American Concrete Institute (ACI) has recognised the talents of Honorary Institute member Ken Day by listing his recent publication Concrete Mix Design, Quality Control and Specification for purchase through their web site.  According to the review:
"This third edition is a stimulating and thought provoking book, rather than a work of reference. It gives proven advice from the author's experience rather than accepted dogma. It points out defects in current standard techniques and philosophies. It is a book for a student, a practical person, or a research worker - for anyone who wants to actually think about concrete, rather than "work by the book". It provides comprehensive, readily understandable assistance to producers and controllers, large and small, in the design and control of concrete.
Self-compacting concrete is of rapidly increasing importance; strengths are constantly rising; marginal aggregates must be used; quality control is a must; and survival necessitates maximum economy.  Antiquated specifications and antiquated control methods must go.
Concrete has become a complex material, generating a substantial number of computerized systems. Ken Day shows how his basic principles of multigrade, multivariable, cusum quality control and specific surface mix design can be applied using simple free programs. He also looks at the future challenge of complex systems for controlling and marketing a large number and variety of mixes in widespread operations. Elaborate systems pay big dividends to the larger producer, but the small producer can still achieve competitive mix designs and close quality control without either excessive expenditure or extensive theoretical study."

Institute members are able to purchase ACI publications and other ACI merchandise for a 20% discount.  To obtain the discount, log onto the ACI site through the Institute's web site at www.concreteinstitute.com.au and then enter the Members' Only section by entering your User Name and Password.
