New President announces council portfolios

Tony Kinlay, Institute President 2007 - 2009    The Institute's President for the 2007 - 2009 term is Tony Kinlay.  Tony formally moved into the President's position at the conclusion of Concrete 07 on 19 October.
    At the commencement of each new Council's term, the President appoints convenors for the various Institute portfolios which cover the major activities in which the Institute is involved.  Names of convenors and their portfolios for 2007 - 2009 appear below.
    As the Institute has recently increased staff resources with the appointment of Ben Cosson as Project Manager Technical Services, Council expects to see a considerable increase in the level of activity in the areas of Publications, Technical, Education and Standards.
    In addition to the increase in full time staff resources, staff located at Branch offices will be increasing their support role for national level activities.
    Any convenor can be easily contacted via the Institute's national office.

Expessions of interest for 2009 awards program open

    The 2009 Excellence in Concrete awards will be officially launched in mid 2008.  Potential entrants can lodge an expression of interest to ensure they receive details when entry forms are available.
    An expression of interest form can be downloaded from the home page of the Institute's web site at www.concreteinstitute.com.au.
    The awards will be presented as part of Concrete 09 at the conference dinner to be held on the evening of Saturday, 19 September 2009.  Further details are also available from staff at the Institute's national office - phone (02) 9736 2955.

Concrete 09 details announced

     The final session of Concrete 07 saw the release of details for the next biennial conference to be held in Sydney from 17 to 19 September 2009.  Luna Park's harbourside Crystal Palace and Big Top will provide a fantastic venue for what promises to be yet another biennial success.
    Attendance at the Institute's biennial conferences has steadily increased in recent years.  Including fringe events, more than 600 attended at some time during the three days of the Adelaide event with most having registered for the full program.

Precast seminar set for Sydney

    A one-day seminar on the design of precast for buildings presented by John Woodside F.I.E.Aust, F.A.S.C.E, M.I.C.E, M.I.Struc.E (winner of the John Connell Gold Medal) and local Institute and National Precast presenters will be offered in Sydney on Tuesday 27 November from 9.00am - 4.45pm.
   Topics to be covered include 
Materials & Tolerances; Precast Building Design; Manufacture, Transportation and Erection; Design of Elements; Contractual & Design Responsibilities; Connections, Fixings and Joints; Thermal, Acoustic, Fire; Properties and Architectural aspects.
    Attendance will be limited to ensure maximum participation so register now to avoid disappointment.

Nominations for Life and Honorary members open

    Lynda Kennedy from the Institute's Brisbane office will be managing the receipt of nominations for Life and Honorary members. The criteria for election to Life and Honorary membership is:  

  • Honorary Member means any person admitted as such whom the Council considers has made an outstanding contribution to the development and use of concrete in Australia.
  •  Life Member means any person admitted as such whom the Council considers has given long and other meritorious service to the Concrete Institute of Australia.

Members interested in proposing potential nominees should contact their local Branch as nominations are  formally proposed by an Institute Branch.
