It's Spring at Easter Seals!

2007 Easter 'Seal'

The famous Easter 'Seal', one of several sent to Canadian households this month.

It may be winter but Easter Seals is thinking spring and summer. Retailers are gearing up to sell Paper Eggs in March and April, the spring direct mail campaign is on its way and participants of the Easter Seals' 24 Hour Relay and Easter Seals' The Drop Zone are ramping up their fundraising efforts.

The annual Paper Egg campaign launches March 8th in Atlantic Canada and March 19 in Ontario and the West, ending on Easter day, April 8th. Easter Seals welcomes back its stalwart supporters, SAAN as National Sponsor and Sobeys West and Lawtons as Regional Sponsors. They and local retailers are poised to surpass their impressive fundraising in 2006. Collectively they raised $684,000. In 2007, the goal is to raise $800,000.

During the campaign, customers are asked to purchase a Paper Egg for $2 ($1 in Saskatchewan), to write their name on the egg for display in the store. All proceeds go to Easter Seals programs and services in the province where they are raised.

Easter Seals is pleased announce that Montreal will re-launch its 24 Hour Relay this year. To assist with recruitment in Montreal and other participating cities, Easter Seals has gone to the movies. Movie goers at Cineplex, Galaxy and Famous Players theatres will see the Relay advertisement prior to the movie.

Through this longstanding event, more than 25-years old, recreational and corporate teams fundraise for months, holding barbecues, poker games, golf tournaments, lotteries and the like. Then in June they come together to compete in a race that lasts 24 hours. One person must be on the track at all times. Plenty of sports and wacky activities keep team members occupied when they are not on the track. Participating cities and dates are:

Victoria (June 2 & 3), Vancouver (June 16 & 17), Calgary (June 9 & 10), Edmonton (June 23 & 24), Saskatoon (June 16 & 17), Regina (June 9 & 10), Toronto (June 23 & 24), Montreal (TBC), Annapolis Valley, N.S. (TBC), Halifax (TBC) and St. John's (June 23 & 24)

Easter Seals welcomes back its Founding Sponsor, Labatt and National Presenting Sponsor, Money Mart. In 2006, Money Mart stores raised an astonishing $333,811 as part of its fundraising through the 24 Hour Relay. Please visit www.24hourrelay.com.

Easter Seals is also recruiting participants of a different nature, those willing to leap off tall buildings. The Easter Seals The Drop Zone inspires people to rip off their suites, don superhero costumes and rappel off the side of skyscrapers. It's a great opportunity to raise funds for Easter Seals, and check out what people are doing on the 17th story.

Buoyed by the success of the Drop Zone Saskatoon in 2006, Easter Seals Saskatchewan plans to introduce The Drop Zone in Regina this year. Participating cities and dates are:

Victoria (September 20), Vancouver (September 17), Calgary (September 6), Edmonton (September 10), Saskatoon (September 14), Regina (September 12), Winnipeg (August 16), Toronto (September 17), Montreal (September 26), and Halifax (June 21).

The Drop Zone is sponsored by CREIT, National Founding Sponsor and Quixtar Canada, National Supporting Sponsor. Be sure to look for the Quixtar Caped Crusaders at a participating city near you! In 2006, Quixtar Canada raised $17,467 during its team rappel in Toronto. Please visit www.thedropzone.ca.

Anthony Comeau Named 2007 Easter Seals Ambassador in PEI

Anthony Comeau, 2007 Ambassador for PEI Easter Seals

Anthony Comeau, 2007 Ambassador for PEI Easter Seals.

Charlottetown - Anthony Comeau, aged 11, has been named Ambassador for this year's PEI Easter Seals Campaign. A grade five student at Donagh Regional School, Anthony lives in Johnstons River with his parents David and Jody Comeau, his brother Nicholas and dog Rily.

Anthony has Cerebral Palsy, which restricts the movement of his legs and arms. He walks on his own but requires constant assistance with his balance. During his 11 years he has had two surgeries, one on his hand and the other on both legs, which enabled him to walk unaided. Anthony has been in physiotherapy since he was six months old.

Anthony is very excited to be the Easter Seals Ambassador, and tells everyone he knows.

"I hopes to raise more money this year than ever before. My motto is 'Help me to Help Others,'" said Anthony.

He also adds that he is ready for the responsibilities of being the Easter Seals Ambassador. This includes traveling across PEI to visit schools during the annual Tim Horton's Easter Seals School Tour and participating in the Easter Beef Show and Sale.

Anthony will join CBC hosts Bruce Rainnie and Matt Rainnie on stage at the Confederation Centre for the Annual Easter Seals Telethon on Match 12th. The three-hour telethon, featuring a cast of top notch entertainers, will enable Islanders to call in pledges on a toll-free line staffed by volunteers from Aliant. The show will feature businesses and organizations that are supporting the Easter Seals campaign through their fundraising efforts.

The Easter Seals campaign is a franchised project of the Charlottetown Rotary Club, and supported by the Rotary clubs of Summerside and Montague. A direct mail campaign, Tim Horton's Ambassador's School Tour, a live telethon on CBC Television, the Paper Egg campaign and other fundraising initiatives enable Easter Seals to provide programs and equipment for people with disabilities on PEI.

The PEI Easter Seals Society has provided financial assistance to support programs at Camp Gencheff, PEI Rehabilitation Council, Joy Riders, CADS-PEI (disabled skiers association) and many other worthy organizations. The Society encourages businesses or organizations interested in supporting this year's Easter Seals campaign to contact Elizabeth Noonan, campaign coordinator, through her office at CBC or by phoning 902-629-6423 or 902-436-0170.

Leafs Join Fans On The Ice For Easter Seals Kids

Happy fans at Toronto Maple Leafs Skate for Easter Seals

Toronto - Imagine skating with your favourite hockey team? That dream was realized for 1,200 Toronto Maple Leaf fans on January 28th during the annual Toronto Maple Leafs Skate for Easter Seals Kids at the Air Canada Centre. The fans raised $125,000 in support of kids with physical disabilities in Ontario through The Easter Seal Society, Ontario.

For a minimum $100 in pledges, participants received a 40-minute skate session and the opportunity to skate in one of the top NHL arenas with current Leafs players and alumni. Top fundraisers receive further incentives and prizes. Children and participants also enjoyed concourse activities ranging from face painting to arts and crafts projects in the Fan Zone.

"As an organization, the Leafs are committed to remaining community leaders and the Toronto Maple Leafs Easter Seals Skate is a demonstration of our commitment," says Bev Deeth, Director of the Leafs Fund. "We're excited to support an initiative that provides Leafs fans and Easter Seals youth with a memorable experience, while at the same time raising money for a worthy cause."

"It means the world to Easter Seals children and their families to have the opportunity to be out on the ice with their favourite Leafs players," says Carol Lloyd, President and CEO, The Easter Seal Society, Ontario. "Over 1,000 participants have generously raised pledges to help Easter Seals provide children with physical disabilities with mobility and communications equipment and opportunities to attend fully-accessible summer camp."

This event was made possible thanks to the generous support of corporate sponsors: Direct Energy, GTHL Canada, the Toronto Sun and AM640 Toronto, Tim Hortons, The Leafs Fund, and Edge Print.

The Easter Seals Skate is an initiative of the Leafs Fund, which is committed to responsible community leadership by providing access to sports and recreation, encouraging health and wellness in the community.

2007 marks the 85th anniversary of The Easter Seal Society, Ontario. Easter Seals provides financial assistance for essential mobility equipment, such as walkers and wheelchairs, for children with physical disabilities, as well as fully accessible summer camp and funding for participation in other summer recreational programs.  For more information, interested participants can visit www.easterseals.org.
