Gloriana – A Thanksgiving for Life

Murray Chamber Choir presents a concert of scintillating works for voices and harp. The choir will be conducted by Michael Halsey and Margaret Phillips. The harpist is Jacinta Dennett. You will hear the Australian premiere of Sir Philip Ledger’s Requiem – a Thanksgiving for Life, Britten’s  Choral Dances from Gloriana and other works celebrating the life of Queen Elizabeth I, and Gustav Holst’s Hymns from Rig Veda.

Sebastian Pammer and Wayne Robinson
The final concert for 2008 features a young man from Vienna currently an exchange student at Wangaratta High School and his teacher at (and also the director of) Northern Rivers Academy of Music, Wayne Robinson. Sebastian has learnt piano from an early age and has become a very accomplished musician. Sebastian and Wayne have planned a program to cover three centuries of music, with works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Grieg, Schumann, Schubert and some 20th century composers. Wangaratta Arts Council has initiated this series of concerts while Wangaratta’s magnificent Steinway Grand is located at the library while the Performing Arts Centre is being constructed. The concerts will continue in 2009. Entry is only $5.


Bric-a-Brac

The final concert for the year in the Cafe Concert Series presented by Wangaratta Arts Council provides a vibrant and colourful tribute to French music from around the world: Parisian folklore and music from Louisiana, Quebec, Brittany and North Africa.  There are also some cleverly camouflaged rendition of great music from some unlikely sources - The Rolling Stones, Mozart, Rollicking Sea Shanties.  The players are Ced Le Meledo (guitar and vocals) Michael Oakley (double bass), Andrew Jennings (drums) Dave Evans (accordion) and Atila Kuit (violin).  A feast of dance, nostalgia and romance: c'est magnifique!  Book at Dislocation, phone 5721 4594.  Tickets $22, $20 concession (or $25 at the door, unless sold out).

The Christmas Party - Live Theatre and Dinner Show

This is a great way for you to enjoy and end of year Christmas function with a twist!  Produced locally, the Christmas Party is a brand new Australian comedy which you can enjoy in the relaxed environs of Tread - get a table of friends together and enjoy a great night out with entertainment and food.  The play is set in a small country town and has something for everyone to relate to.  Tickets are $55 which includes a 2 course meal, a glass of bubly and the entertainment.  For further information telephone 5721 4635.  The shows are scheduled for 21, 22, 28 and 29 November.

 Wednesday 10th December, 8pm, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Wangaratta.

All concerts will be a presentation of beautiful, mostly well known Traditional Christmas Carols with a few delicious surprisesrunning for for about 90 minutes and followed by a Festive supper for choir and audience.  Our Smenge Pipe organ will accompany certain pieces at Oxley, Corowa and Wangaratta Cathedral and the audience participation carols will be supported by the grand Willis Organ in the Cathedral.  Tickets at Corowa and Wangaratta are $15 for all guests, children under 16 are free.

A grants program managed by the National Association for the Visual Arts to provide assistance towards the costs of public presentation of visual arts, craft and design - which can include, but is not limited to framing, media releases, media, photographs, advertising, spacerental, installation costs, promotional printing, mailouts, documentation, freight, travel, equipment, rental, insurance, technical assistance and opening costs.  Amounts available are $500 for individuals and $1,000 for groups.  For further information go to www.visualarts.com.au

Artist Media Opportunity

ArtPost, an interactive website and short video series for TV broadcast, which showcases artists working in regional and remote parts of the country, has been officially launched by the Federal Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts, Peter Garett.   The site provides the tools for students, teachers, art lovers and artists to create short videos about who they are and their work, for inclusion on the digital map.  In five easy steps, a video can be created and uploaded directly to what will become a living art gallery of all corners of Australia. La Dolce Vita Festival

Celebrate the arrival of spring at La Dolce Vita - the King Valley's springtime festival of the sweet wonderful weekend of Mediterranean al fresco indulgence, new release wines and warm King Valley Hospitality.  The range of new release wines on tasting will highlight the extraordinary and wonderful viticulural family winemakers of the region. Tree Climbing Championships

Everyone welcome for an enjoyable time in the park!  Watch some of Victoria's most skillful climbers put to the challenge - high in the tree tops whilst having the opportunity to learn, try or buy the latest and greatest equipment available from trade displays.  There will be fun activities for the kids, including climbing. On The Beat - Cancer Walk Fundraiser
Apex Park, Wangaratta
Sunday 23 November 2008, 12pm - 3pm

On The Beat - Against Cancer involves three teams of four Victorian Police Members participating in a seven day Walk/Ride from Wodonga to Melbourne to raise money for My Room - Children's Cancer Centre.  They will be in Wangaratta on Sunday 23 November and members of the community are invited to come along and meet the police participants and local Police force members - there will be fun and games presented by Silver's Circus and the Victorian Police Display truck will be there.  Food, drinks and entertainment by the One Eyed Jacks will also feature on the day.  Further information can be obtained from Rural City of Wangaratta Events Coordinator, Tanya McAlpin on 03 5722 0737.

Italian Heritage Exhibition
Call for Contributions

The Viva Italia Festival Committee in conjunction with the Wangaratta Rural City Council is developing an Italian Heritage Exhibition to be presented in March 2009.  Celebrating and acknowledging the rich cultural heritage of our local Italian community, we would like to invite residents in the Rural City of Wangaratta to contribute items for exhibition.  The display will be presented as part of the inaugural Wangaratta Viva Italia Festival in 2009.  So if you have significant documents, photographs, slides, physical objects or stories.  For further information contact Maz McGann on 5722 0762 or Maria Bevacqua on 5721 3298.

A River's Tale - Sculpture Walk & Performance
Shepparton / Maroopna Walking Track
Saturday 22 November at 6.30pm

Join the sculpture walk along the path between the two towns.  Starting simultaneously from Shepparton (near Aquamoves) and Mooroopna (Chinaman's Gardens) the walk will finish at Kid's Town in time for A River's Talke Performance in the Amphitheatre.  A Courtesy bus will leave Kid's Town at 9pm to return participants to their cars.  For further information contact the Mooroopna Education Centre on 03 5825 1774.

What the hell are you peo
ple doing in an art gallery anyway?  If you are looking for art, you won't find it here.  Mike Brown 1972.  In 1964 Mike Brown produced a work - known since as The Kite - which challenged and criticised twelve Sydney artists for their blatant embracing of the commercial art-world and its perceived pitfalls.  KITE: Mike Brown and the Sydney twelve returns to this monumental episod in Australian art history juxtaposing Brown's work wtih those whom he criticised.  For further information contact the Wangaratta exhbitions Gallery on 03 5722 0865.

Beryl was the recent winner of the Viewers Choice Award at Milawa Gourmet Regions “A Feast Of Art” show. The prize being one weeks exhibition at the Anna Bienvenu Photographic Gallery.  Beryl describes herself as a responsive traditional realist artist. She has used the mediums of oil painting, pencil and pastels, in this special
exhibition of historic buildings, still Life's and landscapes, all of which have been inspired by our beautiful valley. Yes it is almost the crazy time of year but before things get too hectic, try and relax and enjoy yourself with some great local cultural events that are on around the region. 

The annual La Dolce Vita Festival  is on this weekend with the usual Italian Hospitality on offer in the King Valley.  The end of year exhibitions are also coming up with Goulburn Ovens TAFE presenting both their first and second year students  at the Wangaratta Library and Wangaratta exhibitions Gallery respectively.

For some musical delights you can enjoy the serenity of the Steinway Grand at the Wangaratta Library next Wednesday 19 November or head out to the Vine Hotel on Friday for the french themed ensemble, Bric a Brac. 

Always plenty to see and do so enjoy it now before it gets too busy and too hot!!

txtART: textile art for young people

The Gallery has formed a textile art (txtART) group for funky young people aged 12 - 16. Since the first workshop in July 2007 participants have made "quilted" artworks on canvas, learnt basic knitting, crochet and embroidery techniques, felting, beading and textile jewellery techniques, lino printing on fabric, machine embroidery and have made soft textile sculptures.  The txtART group meets monthly for after-school workshops where members will be able to see demonstrations of traditional & experimental textile skills from textile artists and members of our regional textile groups, before incorporating their new skill into a fun project.  So if you are aged 12 - 16 and would like to learn some new tricks to show off your creative flair and individuality, you need to join txtART!  Cost: Free!

Well Within Me - Wellbeing Workshops

Community Singing Leader Training with Fay White
