Survey of Town Centre and Industry Precinct

The Town is putting the final touches to survey questions which will be presented to all the businesses on Old Perth Road and across the Industrial Precinct in Tonkin Park.

We want to collect basic business data to improve the strategies which we develop for the benefit of our local businesses. We want to know where are you priorities and then have accurate information about your size, main activities and so on.

Businesses in Malaga are familiar with this, as they have been surveyed three times in the last 6 years. So if you have a business in the industrial precinct or on Old Perth Road please keep an eye out and make our surveyors welcome. They won't keep you long, about 20 minutes or so.

Beautiful Markets

Old Perth Road Markets are coming!

Since Council announced a couple of months ago an 'in principal' support for markets on Old Perth Road, I have received lots of calls asking when are they starting. Between 10 and 20 residents in the area have added their names to the data base of potential stall holders. I have also visited a number of Markets and picked up a number of interested businesses who are keen to know more about them when the time comes around.

But right now we are forming the Committee. In the next few weeks, we'll provide a submission to Council of potential nominees. The Committee will be responsible for giving the advice to Council on how they should be run!

Expand your cafe..........

The Council recently agreed to a policy on Outdoor Eating aka.... Alfresco Dining.

This may provide you with extra income in the busier times and also add to the village atmosphere that we are keen to encourage. Enjoying a coffee and muffin or a lunch in the open air is so attractive and easy in this weather.

If you want to find out more, please contact the EDO and we can email the Policy and fees to you.

Do you like data and lots of it?

How many people live here?

Do we do unpaid work?

What type of households do we live in?

What type of internet connection do we have?

How do we get to work?

How old are we?

All of these questions and many many more are all answered on Profile id. This demographic info has been drawn from Census information from the last four Census and is freely available. It is a program which Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) have purchased and everyone can use. Log onto the EMRC's web site and go to the tab: About Perth's Eastern Region. (See the bottom of the page for the link to Community Profile).

There is plenty of data on Bassendean itself, but if you want more then you can also see the details for all the other regions in the Eastern Metro Region. And if that's not enough, you can click through to www.id.com.au web site and soon you have the demographic details of up to 200 local government areas right across Australia.  Compare results with Bankstown, NSW or the Sunshine Coast, Queensland for example. Use it to build the best Business Case for the bank or research where and how you should be marketing your self. It is there for you at any time.

Beware though....you could happily lock yourself up with these web sites for a week and not get to the bottom of it. If this information gets you interested, don't forget to eat.

Management Tip of The Day

Harvard Business Publishing offer these short emails every day with insightful business tips.

For example, one I received the other day...

BREAK THROUGH RECESSION CAUTION

Recessions can be times of extraordinary opportunity: Kellogg doubled its ad budget during the Great Depression, catapulting the company to industry domination where it remains today. Apple introduced the iPod in 2001, six weeks after September 11th. Yet most organizations, even during flush times, are reluctant to make bold strategic moves. Don't let the recession hold you and your company back. Emerging from the recession as a market leader requires making unconventional moves and challenging the status quo in your industry. Respond to the pressure and take the risks needed to capitalize on recession opportunity.
